Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1917
Russia. Paul I (1754-1801). Son of Catherine the Great. He inaugurated some reforms in the treatment of serfs and provoked the hostility of the nobility and the army. He joined the Second Coalition against France (1798) and his army aided in expelling the French from northern Italy (1799). In 1800-01 he participated in the organization of the northern maritime league of Russia, Sweden, and Denmark against Great Britain. He was assassinated.

Document Signed as Czar of Russia, February 28, 1797, Saint Petersburg, 1 page, 9 x 7¼ in. Written in Russian on stationery with a black mourning border (his mother had died less than four months earlier), to Lord Hof-Marshall Count (Tisenhausen), regarding payments for repair and maintenance of palaces and gardens; all supervisors are to report to the count, who is to report to Paul. Light toning, else fine. With translation.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Lot 1918
Russia. Albertus Ruble, 1796-BM. Bitkin-13; Sev-2381; Dav-1687. Paul I. Here is one of the most important and popular type coins in this wonderful collection, the Albertus Ruble. Certainly among the finest known and may well be the best example extant. It is superbly struck with prooflike surfaces and exquisite peripheral toning in russet and blue. The interesting design features a finely sculpted eagle and the biblical quotation "Not Unto Us Not Unto Us But In Thy Name" in an ornamented square panel on the reverse. The Romanoff eagle is duplicated in miniature on the eagle's tail, superimposed by a St. Andrew Cross. A specimen of great beauty worthy of the finest collection. PCGS graded MS-65.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

Lot 1922
Russia. Novodel Ruble, 1801-SM AI. Bitkin-H35; Sev-2488. Paul I. Edge-6. This is a superb specimen, very well struck and beautifully toned in silvery gray and iridescent hues. The surfaces are very prooflike and nearly immaculate. A curious and attractive effect of striking, as if the planchet was squeezed into a somewhat smaller collar, is a slight elevation of the fields toward the rims, especially on the obverse. This type is rated R2, with 10-19 specimens estimated extant. We doubt if any of those, should there be that many, will be as nice as this very choice example. Extremely rare and the only specimen seen in the past 25 years. PCGS graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000.
